In Celebration
of Magical Maya Paradise

Spring Equinox 2009
Tikal, Antigua & Lake Atitlan, Guatemala, and
Copan and Isla Roatan, Honduras
March 16-31, 2009

March 16. Day 1.
Arrivals in Guatemala - transfers to Antigua (Over Night (ON) at the Don Rodigro or Villa Antigua).

March 17. Day 2. 8 AM - Breakfast. 9 AM - Group meeting. 10:30ish - 1/2 day tour in Antigua. 2-3 PM - drive to Lake Atitlan. Evening Presentation with Enrique (ON at the Don Rodigro or Portal del Lago at Atitlan).

La Antigua, Guatemala (commonly referred to as just Antigua or La Antigua) is a city in the central highlands of Guatemala famous for its well-preserved Spanish, Baroque architecture, as well as a number of spectacular ruins of colonial churches. It has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will love wandering the streets.

March 18. Day 3. 7 AM - Breakfast. 9 AM - Mystical Lake Tour to Santiago and other areas around the Lake. Evening Presentation with Aluna Joy (ON at the Don Rodigro or Portal del Lago at Atitlan).

Panajachel at Lake Atitlan is an 800 year old pueblo of about 14,000 people . . . mostly Cachikel Mayans and some foreigners from every corner of the globe, living inside the rainbow. In the highlands of Guatemala, especially around Lake Atitlan, the Mayan culture still rules. In Panajachel, it thrives. The Mayans are known for being friendly, funny, welcoming of strangers, but shy. Living among them is an enchanting experience. There are about a dozen other villages scattered around Lake Atitlan. Some are Cachikel, and some are Tz'utujil. They speak different languages. The lake people were accustomed to dealing with people they couldn't talk to long before tourists ever showed up.

March 19. Day 4. 8AM - Breakfast. Thursday is Market Day in Chichicastenango (ON at the Don Rodigro or Portal del Lago at Atitlan).

Chichicastenango is known for its myriad of colors present in the multiple styles of traditional dress of the local Indians. The women wear the traditional, multi-coloured Huipile (blouse) and a skirt (otherwise known as a corte) made up of the most startling of natural dyes. Take time to look around the market and appreciate the beautiful rugs and textiles on sale, not to mention the copious plants, candles, pigs and chickens. The church of Santo Tomás, opposite the main market place, is the main focus of the celebrations. When you enter, do not use the side doors - it is regarded as disrespectful. A glimpse of the church interior reveals a mix of Catholic and Amerindian culture.

March 20. Day 5. Equinox is at 8:44 AM. Breakfast. Authentic Mayan Ceremony, Lake Atitlan - still being confirmed (ON at the Don Rodigro or Portal del Lago at Atitlan).

March 21. Day 6. 6 AM - Breakfast. 7 AM - drive to Guatemala City and take a noonish flight to Flores. Bus deep into the Peten jungle and arrive at the sacred site of TIKAL. Possible after dinner evening meditation inside TIKAL for Mayan New Year . . . Or . . . Presentation with Enrique (ON at the Tikal Inn).

March 22. Day 7. Breakfast. Tikal - all day in the site - with our famous Guide Julio Tut (ON at the Tikal Inn).

Tikal is among the world's travel wonders. Many call Tikal one of the most spiritually powerful spots on Earth. Because of its importance and magnificent combination of nature and archaeological remains, Tikal has been declared a Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. The Tikal National Park is not only home to an ancient Mayan City. Screeching howler monkeys and squawking parrots provide a great nature's soundtrack to all visitors in the area. Monkeys, white lipped peccaries, brocket deer, coati-mundis, toucans, scarlet macaws, parrots, ocelots and even the seldom jaguar can occasionally be spotted. Along with much vegetation and spices, there is also an abundance of tropical flowers.

March 23. Day 8. Breakfast. Tikal - all day in the site - with Aluna Joy and Enrique
(ON at the Tikal Inn).

Deep within misty jungles of the Peten,
hidden stone time machines await our return.
They wait for us to remember their stories,
their wisdom, their paradise.
They wait to be released from
their elegant carved stone stele.
They can only be released once
they know the truth will live on in us.
It is time for us to recall
an era of ancient truth and peace.
Slumbering giants ...
awaken our hearts to recall an
an new era of paradise ...
so we may live it now!

March 24. Day 9. Breakfast. Early AM flight from Flores to Guatemala City. Then bus on to Copan all in one day (ON at the Copan Marina).

March 25. Day 10. Breakfast. Copan - All day in the site. (ON at the Copan Marina).

The Copan Ruins are located in the western part of Honduras, 9.3 miles from the border with Guatemala. Copan, meaning "a Bridge", is known as Xukpi to the Maya and was the main Mayan city in the southern territory. It has been designated as a World Heritage Site and is believed by archeologists to be the cultural center, the Paris, of the Maya world.

March 26. Day 11. Breakfast. Copan - All day in the site. Pre-Dinner Sunset Closing Circle, for those leaving early, at the Haciendia San Lucas. Dinner at the amazing Haciendia San Lucas (ON at the Copan Marina).

March 27. Day 12. Breakfast. If you are leaving us at this point, we can arrange a very early, private bus to Guatemala City for your very late afternoon or evening flight home (an additional $50 transfer fee). Also, if you need a night on the 27th in Guatemala City, we can arrange this for you if you like). Maya Paradise Retreat . . . Roatan Extension

Equinox ~ March 16-31, 2009

We believe that what we hold in our hearts is what we create in our world.
If we want paradise we must, see it, know it, and live it, to create it.
As Gandhi said "Be the change we want to see in the world."
With this in mind, we invite you to join us in a celebration of Paradise
that is manifested in Mundo Maya, a Magical Maya world.
The world of Atitlan, the place where the rainbow gets its colors.
We invite you on a mystical banquet of beauty for the heart.
We offer this because we want your heart to know a world ...
where all cultures, past and present, are valued and all life on Earth is respected and preserved.
We want your heart to know a deep sense of belonging within a growing global family.

We will take you from … spectacular Maya temples to deeply stirring Maya ceremony.
We will take you from … mystical mountains to magical jungles.
We will take you from … holy lakes to the heavenly blue waters of the sea.
We will to pay tribute to the ancients who have walked on this Earth before us and...
We will to honor their descendants who walk with us today.
We will be in wonder and awe of the birds and monkeys in the trees,
to the fish and dolphins in the sea
... and we KNOW your heart will never be the same.

We want your heart to remember a world where beauty always surrounds us
and peace in always in our hearts, and our souls can feel at home.
If we are to create together a beautiful, peaceful, unified world,
our hearts must remember these things.
Will you help us remember?
Will you help us create a beautiful world?
(inspired by the spirits of the ancient ones of Atitlan)

It is our intent that this pilgrimage will open our inner ears to help us remember the importance of basic inner truths in a complicated world. Experience a living Maya Tradition. When the Spanish Conquistadores arrived in America, one of their main drives was to eliminate the native religion. They thought it was the work of the devil. The Mayan concepts of life and death were just too outrageous for them to be able to comprehend. Although 500 years of oppression have passed, the Mayan religion has managed to survive. The Tzutujil and Kiche Maya nations still follow a yearly cycle of rituals. In Mayan beliefs, humans have their place and duty in the greater scheme of things. In order to ensure that the sun is going to cross the sky, and the seasons are going to change, it is necessary that the humans do their part. This includes taking part in certain rituals and accepting some sort of sacrifice to the greater good. There are a great number of religious celebrations in the Guatemalan highlands. I t is a very sacred place on Earth.

Atitlan is a Mayan word that translates as the place where the rainbow gets its colors. Lake Atitlan is considered an enchanted Lake that formed after a massive eruption over 100,000 years ago. It has a huge significance for the Mayans, and is featured prominently in their holy book of the creation . . . the Popul Wuj. The spirit that the lake invokes is the hidden gem of Guatemala, and makes this lake of the most mystical and spiritual destinations in the world. Framed by three perfectly shaped volcanoes, with ever-changing blues in both sky and lake, it is easy to see how Aldous Huxley dubbed this 'the most beautiful lake in the world'. A dozen indigenous villages ring the lake, each with its own distinctive weave of textiles, culture and art. Casa Palopo is in the village of Santa Catarina Palopo known for its weaving and distinctive blue textiles; next door to Casa Palopo is San Antonio Palopo which has ceramics. San Marcos is renowned for its alternative therapies and massages. Santiago Atitlan has very colorful traditional garb, a fascinating church, and the shrine of the god Maximon. This area of the highlands is one of the few places where both men and women wear traditional clothes and is a highlight of any visit to Guatemala.

Tikal . . . a place of power and nature. Tikal is among the world's wonders. Many call Tikal one of the most spiritually powerful spots on Earth. Tikal possesses a certain quality of magic that fascinates and enchants. It stretches your mind and heart to hold more wisdom and light. The monumental site, with its towering pyramids, looms out of the misty jungle canopy like living sentinels of ancient times. They speak to those with open hearts. The ruins of Tikal include more than 3,000 structures extending over six square miles and including palaces, temples, ceremonial platforms, ball courts, terraces, plazas, avenues and steam baths. It is paradise.

Copan . . . the most powerful site in the Maya lands, is renowned for its magnificent Maya Ruins and dozens of Living Stela. Copan is rich stone sculptures and intricate hieroglyphs that make Copan an incomprehensible mystery on the "La Ruta Maya". The entire area is enshrouded in a tangible mystery. Stories of UFO sightings abound throughout the surrounding villages. Its rich stone sculptures and intricate hieroglyphs are legendary. During the reign of its most illustrious king, Waxak Lahun Ubah K'awil (also known as "18 Rabbit"), the royal sculptors of Copan displayed their innovative talents in many stelae that 18 Rabbit commissioned. The Hieroglyphic Stairway, a stairway into the sun, includes the longest single glyphic text found at any Maya site.

What is COPAN for the spiritual traveler today? Several translations have been offered regarding the meaning and purpose of COPAN. COPAN means "Xuxpi" or "Xukpi" which is related to a inner dimensional Celestial Bird. According to the mystical world of the Mayas, the Celestial Bird was in charge of taking your spirit from one place to another. You can see this Celestial Bird in Copan Temples such like Rosalila. Copan could be considered "a Bridge" or "COPANTL", which means "pontoon or bridge". We think Copan is a bridge between dimensions, and consider this site the most powerful site in the Maya world. It is also home to the Butterfly Man (from Copan).

Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over
it became a butterfly.

THE STORY OF THE BUTTERFLY MAN

On our last day of our March 2008 Palenque pilgrimage, we took some time to visit Palenque's museum. Usually I'm not a person who enjoys museums, but this one is different. In the center of the museum, standing completely by itself, is the only living stone I know of in Palenque. It is odd because Palenque is not known for Stella. In fact, this is the only one. It does not look like anything else in Palenque either. I always knew it was a living stone, but up to this point, it never spoke to me. In year's past, I would stop to say hello and move on fully expecting to be ignored. However, just like everything else in Palenque which opened this year, this living stone was also ready to share.

As I stood near the Stella, I was very happy to hear his introduction. He said that he was the "Butterfly Man from Copan" (a Mayan site in Honduras). For awhile, this is all I could hear. But he was quite clear. He said "I AM the Butterfly Man from Copan." This was confusing because Copan is a long ways from Palenque.

This is the first time that I had ever heard about the existence of a Butterfly Man. His energy was quite different than I am used to translating. So it took some time for Butterfly Man and myself to build a bridge between our frequency differences. As we began to exchange energy, I began to see a pulsing, fluttering-like energy around my heart. I began to realize that this was what he was talking about . . . the butterfly was around my heart. So I asked what the butterfly heart was. He said that one side of the butterfly was the Earth, the other was the stars. When the Star Elders came to the Earth, one of their biggest challenges was to not become earthbound. By having an activated butterfly heart (a butterfly merkabah), each could live in this world and the starry world at the same time. With the butterfly heart, they could have the courage to come to the Earth, explore its beauty, and study its nature without concern about being forever Earthbound. It was his job to teach others how to activate their butterfly merkabah. It was also his job to set earthbound star seeds free from their limitations, so they could once again return to the stars if they so chose to.

Each in our group stood by the Butterfly Man to receive this teaching. We all were intrigued and wanted to reactivate our butterfly heart. It was a beautiful moment for us. We did catch the attention of a guard at the museum, but oddly enough, he left us alone as we stood there and meditated next to our new friend, the Butterfly Man. After our group returned home, a group member named Maria did a quick search on the internet for the "Maya Butterfly Man". I was so excited when I read her email, because what she discovered was so similar to what I was receiving from Butterfly Man directly that it was shocking. This is what she sent me:

Tzutujil Mayans in Guatemala speak of simultaneous Twin Realities: the world of dreams and the world of work. These worlds are likened to the opposing wings of a Butterfly: the dream world is one wing, and the awake world is the other. They believe the wings must connect at the Heart for the Butterfly to fly and live. Real life occurs because of the interaction of the wings. The Life is the Butterfly's Heart. Life, like the Butterfly's Heart, is kept alive by the two opposing, mirroring, twinlike wings.

I feel like the dream world was what the Butterfly Man referred to as the stars, and the world of work is what the Butterfly Man referred to as the Earth. The living Mayas today are fully aware that written text, that was re-recorded by Maya people after the conquest, is not the complete truth. Much was lost during the dark times of the conquistadors. But yet it is exciting here to see how much has survived. If we can read these recorded texts with an open heart, knowing that it holds fragments of truth throughout, these words might help us discover more knowledge regarding our awakening and our mastery.

Then I found this text from The Book of Secrets by Deepak Chopra which stated . . . "Two chemicals called actin and myosin evolved eons ago to allow the muscles in insect and butterfly wings to contract and relax. Thus butterflies and insects learned to fly. When one of these paired molecules is absent, wings will grow but they cannot flap and are therefore useless. Today, the same two proteins are responsible for the beating of the human heart, and when one is absent, the person's heartbeat is inefficient and weak, ultimately leading to heart failure." He goes on to say "In our hearts, we feel the impulse to fly, to break free of boundaries. Isn't that the same impulse nature expressed when insects began to take flight?"

It is with great inspiration of the Butterfly Man of Copan,
that we arranged this schedule
with the intent to give wings to our heart and soul.
Will you come fly with us?

A huge THANK YOU to our group in Palenque for 2008! ! !
There were 35 in the group from 10 different countries! The impeccability and LOVE this group expressed was immeasurable. We did not catch them all in this group photo. At least a third of our group was MIA for this photo. Most were out hugging pyramids and trees, and things like that. Palenque was amazing this year. It was pumping out immeasurable energy and LOVE.
